| Our cottage is made of cob, an ancient building material similar to adobe, consisting of clay-rich soil, sand, straw, and water. We mix this by foot on tarps and lay it up in small loaves. Round and split pieces of douglas fir are inlaid to to take up space (cob is labor-intensive) and to give us somewhere to fasten counters and other heavy objects. The foundation is made of broken concrete slab ("urbanite") mortared together above a rubble trench. We'll be updating this site as things progress through the fall, winter, and spring. |
