Several aspects of the Stratus Coupe are owner programmable. I'll try to list them all here.
The fine print:
Please Note: I will not be held responsible for any damage or incurred costs while attempting these procedures.
I have attempted to reproduce the steps as printed in various sources. If you find an error, please let me know and I will correct it ASAP.
Also note" I am not a Mitsubishi mechanic, so some of this terminology may not be exact. Use it only as an aid in researching the bigger picture.

Programming the ECU for new keys:
Many owners seem to have misconceptions about just what a Transponder Key
is, and how it works, so I'll start there.
Inside the key head is a simple microchip, with an embedded serial number or
code. This serial number is "hardcoded" to the chip, and cannot be changed.
(This is the same technology used when embedding ID chips under your pets skin.)
With the key in the ignition, the ECU can "ask" the key its electronic serial
number (hence the term transponder), which it will then verify is a valid
key in its lookup table.
Regardless of a proper cut, and the ability to turn on the ignition, if you use
a key not found in the ECU validation table, it will shut down the car under the
assumption it is being stolen.
The ECU is capable of adding up to 8 keys to its table, but to add more, the ECU
requires you to “prove” you are the true owner, by utilizing two known valid
keys before it will place itself into "learning mode".
FOR THIS
REASON ALONE, ALL OWNERS SHOULD HAVE A MINIMUM OF 3 KEYS PREPROGRAMMED. (If
you loose one key, you can still buy and reprogram a third on your own)
Once in learning mode you simply insert the new key, the ECU will query it for
the serial number and add it to its table for future reference.
The owners manual describes the procedure for the 02 R/T as follows.
YOU MUST HAVE TWO VALID KEYS TO
START!
YOUR NEW KEY MUST BE CUT!
1.) Insert 1st valid key and turn to the “On” position for 5 seconds
2.) Turn the ignition “off” and remove 1st key.
3.) Insert the second valid key, and switch the ignition to the “on” position
within 7 seconds. (Note: Theft alarm indicator will blink twice, indicating it
is in the learn mode)
4.) Insert the new key and switch on within 7 seconds.
NOTE: The theft alarm indicator will light for about 3 seconds when the serial
number registration is complete.
Not having TWO valid keys, commits you to visiting your dealership. They can
place the ECU in learn mode via their diagnostics system, and load two keys to
the ECU validation table, regaining you the ability to load more on your own.
I do not doubt that you must purchase a blank key for your specific year. It
would be a simple matter for Mitsu engineers to change
prefix or suffix requirements within the ECU tables each year.
Adding keyless entry transmitters
You can reference the procedure in the 2002 Factory Service Manual Volume 1,
Section 8P-9
The 2002 R/T Coupe can learn up to 4 transmitters.
You cannot “ADD” a transmitter one at a time. You must
register ALL your transmitter, new and old at the same time.
THE CHRYSLER VERSION: (Or see simplified version below)
1.) Check the doors lock normally when the key is used
2.) Insert the ignition key (NOTE: to prevent damage, always turn the ignition
switch to "LOCK” (OFF) position.
3.) Ground terminal 1 of the data link connector
4.) Press the hazard switch six times within 10 seconds. (Note: at this time the
code registration monitor request is output [all doors locked and unlocked] and
becomes registration mode.) (NOTE: The hazard warning light switch is turned on
and off alternately whenever pushed.)
5.) Press the transmitter switch, and then press it two times within 10 seconds
of the first press. This will register the code.
6.) When the registration is complete, the code registration monitor request is
output(all doors locked and unlocked).
7.) If you are using two or more transmitters, or have added a second
transmitter, the same registration procedure should be carried out within one
minute after registering the first transmitter. After the second registration is
completed, the code registration monitor request is output(all doors locked and
unlocked).
8.) Registration mode will be canceled under any of the following conditions
8a.) when the secret code of the transmitter has been registered
8b.) when one minute has been passed after registration mode.
8c.) When the ground wire to pin one is removed
8d) When the key is removed from the ignition.
9.) After registration is completed, carry out the following work, and then
check that the keyless entry system operates normally.
9a.) Remove the ignition key
9b.) Close all the doors
THE SIMPLIFIED VERSION
(I think the simplified method is more like this, but
don’t hold me to it until someone tries it, cause I haven’t!)
1.) Insert key in ignition, set to “Off” or “Lock”
2.) Ground pin 1 on the Datalink connection
3.) Press the hazard switch 6 times within 10 seconds
4.) Press the transmitter button 3 times within 10 seconds
(System will respond by locking and unlocking doors as acknowledgment)
Here is where it gets muddled for me, as I don’t think
you need to repeat step 3, but instead simply do step 4… I may be interpreting
it wrong.
5.) Repeat step 4 for all additional transmitters, within 1 minute of last
attempt.
6.) When done, simply remove ground from datalink connector
Enabling/Disabling the Keyless remote "Answerback"
You can reference the procedure in the 2002 Factory Service Manual Volume 1, Section 8P-7
If the keyless entry system locks and unlocks the doors, you should see one or all of the following.
1.) The dome light flashes
2.) The hazard lights flash (Hazard answerback)
3.) The horn sounds (Horn answerback)
You can Enable or Disable the Hazard and/or Horn answerback alerts.
ENABLE/DISABLE HAZARD LIGHTS ANSWERBACK (When only Transmitter is used)
Hazard light answerback can be turned on for one or both "locking" and "unlocking" actions, The trick here is to note the order in which you push, then release the two buttons on your transmitter. For the flashers, the start order is the same, but the release order toggles the on/off setting.
To flash when locking:
1.) Sit in car, close doors, insert and remove the ignition key.
2.) On your transmitter, push and hold the "LOCK" switch for four to ten seconds, the push "UNLOCK".
3) With both buttons pressed, release the "LOCK" button first, then the "UNLOCK" button.
Car computer will respond with 1 beep indicating flash enabled, 2 beeps for flash disabled.
To flash when unlocking:
1.) Sit in car, close doors, and remove the ignition key.
2.) On your transmitter, push and hold the "LOCK" switch for four to ten seconds, the push "UNLOCK"
3) With both buttons pressed, release the "UNLOCK" button first then the "LOCK" button.
Car computer will respond with 1 beep indicating flash enabled, 2 beeps for flash disabled.
ENABLE/DISABLE HORN ANSWERBACK (verified)
Notice the starting order is different than for the hazard answerback (above)
1.) Sit in car, close doors, insert, then remove the ignition key.
2.) Push the "LOCK" button on the remote for four to ten seconds.
3.) While still holding the "LOCK" Button, press and hold the "UNLOCK" Button.
4.) Release both buttons at the same time.
Car computer will respond with 1 beep, horn answerback enabled, 2 beeps horn answerback disabled.
Enabling/Disabling the rolling door-lock function (verified)
You can reference the procedure in the 2002 Factory Service Manual Volume 1, Section 8P-3
The rolling lock can be turned on and off by the following operations:
1.) Insert key into ignition, and set to the "LOCK" (OFF) position
2.) Close all doors
3.) Depress the master door lock switch in the "lock" (forward) position for 10 seconds.
The ETACS-ECU will chime once of roll-lock ON, and twice for roll-lock OFF.
Setting the Compass
The manual (2002 Factory Service Manual Volume 1, Section 8E-81) indicates compass is self calibrating under normal driving conditions, however if manual calibration is desired you can use the following steps.
Setting the compass is a two step process.
First calibrate the unit by finding a open parking lot.
1.) With the engine started
2.) Press and hold the "ON/OFF" button (on the compass pod) until "-- --" appears in the display then release the button.
3.) drive very slowly in a circle until the "-- --" disappears.
Second, set the compass variance zone in accordance you your location.
Refer the the image below for the number associated with your location.
1.) press the "ON/OFF" button for 3 to 6 seconds. (The current zone number will appear on the left side of the display)
2.) press "C/F" button to select the correct zone for your area.
3.) Press the "ON/OFF button will exit the zone entry mode
