SUSO talks to the organizers of the Skagit Food Share Alliance fund raiser, about this year's Bite of Skagit on Gates street in downtown Mount Vernon. Music, a local beer and wine garden, Cooking Corner demonstrations with chef Graham Kerr, and bites from many great Skagit restaurants. Terry Belcoe and Susan Lanahan from North Coast Credit Union, and Arielle Stein from the Skagit Food Bank Distribution Center, talk about the Food Share Alliance partnership with SCAA and the Skagit Valley Food Co-op, and the state of Skagit County's food security, with SUSO host Jodie Buller.

Creating Holiday Traditions with Local Food - October 28, 2009

We hear from Burk, longtime co-owner and chef at Burk's cafe in Ballard and current leader of Slow Food Skagit, and WSU Extensions Climate Stewards coordinator Christine Betchley, about their upcoming presentation at the Burlington Library, and the wealth of local seasonal options for holiday feasts. Skagit County Climate Stewards are hosting a five part lecture series this season, sponsored by NW Clean Air Agency, Padilla Bay Estuarine Reserve, and WSU Extension. Climate Stewards is a university level educational program to engage community members in Climate Change projects.

Eat Local - August 19, 2009

Harvest time in the Skagit Valley makes it easy to choose Local! SUSO talks with Georgiann Dustin, from downtown Mount Vernon's main Street Program about upcoming downtown events and the 3/50 project, which asks people to choose 3 independent businesses and prioritizes $50 to go to supporting these businesses. We also talk with Slow Food Action committee member Shelley Schoenberger, about Skagit's upcoming Eat Local Week, September 14-20th, and how people can get involved by dining out at local restaurants and bringing a local dish to one of five community potluck picnics on Sunday 9/20 from 1-4pm.

Food, Inc. and the fight to re-localize our food system - July 29, 2009

Since Food, Inc hit the movie theatres this summer, the conversation about industrialized food is stirring up some interesting questions about the consolidation of control over our food system. We talk with local organizer Shonie Schlotzhauer from Whatcom County's Sustainable Connections and Max Morange from the Small Potatoes Gleaning project about efforts to re-localize our regions food system, creating an equitable food system where people of all income levels have access to good food, and how to engage the Eaters to pay more attention to where their food is coming from.
