Join jim as she re-visits a couple of our first interviews in 2006 (with MVHS Peace and Justice members and with then 93 year old educator, Peace Corps volunteer and actor, Virginia Spray.) Kathryn DeFilippo of Mount Baker Planned Parenthood and the Skagit Human Rights Festival (SHRF) planning committee joins jim to talk about an International Women's Day celebration on Sat., March 9 and the SHRF program entitled Women in Leadership on Saturday, March 23rd from 2 - 4:30 PM on the Skagit Valley College campus in the Phillip Tarro Theatre. One Billion Rising - Ending Gender Based Violence - February 6 2013 SUSO's Jodie Buller talks with Courtney Long from Skagit DVSAS about Skagit statistics on gender-based violence, and about the larger example of rape culture. They are joined in the studio by Wendolyn Rue from Studio 1010 in Anacortes, who shares personal experience that prompted her to help coordinate local "risings" in Oak Harbor and Anacortes on February 14th, to recognize V-DAY. Eve Ensler, who wrote The Vagina Monologues and started V-Day in 1998, has something special planned for this February 14: One Billion Rising, as supporters and friends of victims of gender based violence gather to "strike, rise, dance!" as part of this global movement to end violence against women and girls. http://www.onebillionrising.org - check for local Risings to find the Oak Harbor and Anacortes events

Mount Baker Planned Parenthood, Komen Foundation and the war on women - May 23, 2012 jim speaks with Linda McCarthy, Mount Baker Planned Parenthood (MBPP), Executive Director and Christina Wright, MBPP, Director of External Affairs about the war on women and it's effects here in Whatcom and Skagit Counties. Linda and Christina talk about their programs, the Congressional and legislative attacks on women as well as the Komen Foundation. The national Komen Foundation in December of 2011 announced they were cutting off grants/funds to Planned Parenthood. After public outcry, they changed their mind. This decision was NOT discussed with local Komen affiliates who have always been very supportive of MBPP. Ina May Gaskin on Natural Childbirth - May 16, 2012 Ina May Gaskin is called the godmother of authentic midwifery. She has been attending women in labor for over 40 years on "The Farm" in southern Tennessee, and more than any other single person, has helped revive the ancient profession of midwifery in the U.S. Ina May is now an internationally known advocate of honoring the natural process of childbirth - supporting and assisting women who want an option to the interventions of modern obstetrics. She joined us by phone from her home in Tennessee to talk about her life's work. Her most recent book is "Birth Matters, A Midwife's Manifesta." INTERVENE: Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking in Skagit County - January 19, 2011 SUSO's Jodie Buller talks to Bethany Dearborn who works with Skagit Against Slavery, SDVSAS, and Tierra Nueva, about an upcoming training for support services, law, and legal professionals on this international and local human rights issue.
