Vietnam Today - January 9, 2013 Ted Maloney, Director of Global Initiatives at Skagit Valley College talks with Dave about two recent trips to Vietnam; trips that included crawling through the Ku Chi Tunnels, visiting museums dedicated to memories of the Vietnam War; taking part in door to door surveys in a mountain village - but most importantly, meeting, getting to know, and coming to enjoy the people and the country. Reflections on war and its aftermaths - and recoveries - round out the conversation.

Film: Shift Change - September 26, 2012 SUSO host and producer jim talks about a new film, Shift Change: Putting Democracy to Work, with film producer Melissa Young of Moving Images known in Skagit for their film, Good Food, and associate producer and Moving Images Board member, Tony Harrah. Shift Change looks at employee-owned cooperative business enterprises in North America, as well as in the Basque region of Spain. Ever heard of Mondragon in Spain? It is a cooperative founded in 1956 with 125 companies and over 83,000 worker owners in Basque country which is thriving and serving as a model for others seeking an alternative in our sour economy and beyond. It's Putting Democracy to Work! Shift Change closes out a film series at the Skagit Valley Food Co-op in Mount Vernon which will run Tuesday evenings at 6:30 PM in October, starting Oct. 9. The first 3 films make up Teddy Bear Films' Globalization Trilogy: Store Wars, China Blue, and Bitter Seeds. More information can be found about the series and the films at Skagit Food Co-op under events. Associate producer, Tony Harrah, will be on hand on Oct. 30 when Shift Change: Putting Democracy to Work will debut in Skagit. It will be at the Pickford on Nov. 3rd. A Tribute to Jerry Sommerseth - April 27, 2011 As Jerry Sommerseth lies in Harborview Hospital's intensive care unit recovering from a fall in his home, jim talks with a variety of people about how they know Jerry and what they know of him. Among the speakers are Marilyn Kallshian of Central United Methodist Church, Elinor Nakis, Consuelo Guandique, and those who have stood vigil with him at the courthouse: Bud Meyer, John Knudsen, Jim Johnson, Marilyn Kinney, Ginny Darvill, Irma Bode, and John, the peace wizard. Sunday, May 1 is the 24th Annual Farmworkers Solidarity March. Jerry won't be out of the hospital, so the call has gone out to those who know him to join the march for him. Meet at Maiben Park in Burlington at 10:30 AM. March to Skagit Valley College's Pavilion where a meal will be served and a speakers will make presentations.

2010 Census - March 24, 2010 This week on Speak up! Speak out! jim talks with Denie Luna, Media Specialist for the 2010 Census to find out the specifics about how the 2010 Census is attempting to reach the undercounted communities, a bit of census history and how one can track the census returns by zip code. jim also talks with Jeanne Youngquist, Skagit County Auditor, and/or Gabrielle Clay, Outreach Coordinator for Elections in the Auditor's office. They give the impact on our electoral system. Will Skagit County get a Spanish ballot as required by law if a language group reaches 5% of the total population? If per the census Washington State is allotted a 10th Congress person, who does the redistricting and how is it done? Also joining Speak up! Speak out! is Karen Parnell, Deputy Director of Skagit Co Community Action Agency to talk more specifically about the local impact of program funds based on the census. http://2010census.gov - One can track census form return and much more
A Different Mount Vernon, WA - September 9,2009 Mount Vernon, Washington has been in the news recently ? gaining notoriety for bringing a "native son" to town to receive a key to the city and have a day named after him, Glenn Beck Day. Today we talk with residents in Skagit County about why this is happening and to give a different view, a local spin, of the town in rural Skagit County an hour north of Seattle. Joining in the conversation are Mike Urban, a business owner and City Council member; Georgiann Dustin, Executive Director of the Mount Vernon Downtown Association, a historical Main Street District; Alberto Candivi, a restaurant owner in downtown Mount Vernon; Kathy Reim, chair of Skagit PFLAG (Parents, Friends & Family of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender); Steve Crider, a local activist involved in the arts community who also has strong sustainability interests; and Jerome Edge, a young, black/Native man who has another radio show on KSVR.
