SUSO's Jodie Buller talks with author, economist, academic and activist Raj Patel, who will be giving the keynote address after the SVC GlobalFest International Dinner on January 28th. Raj's 2008 book Stuffed and Starved looks at the disastrous consequences of our current Global Food System, and follows emerging sustainable global food movements. This engaging conversation follow some interesting threads, including the consequences of debt and shame on farmers across the world, how obesity and hunger are points along the poverty spectrum, and how women's rights are necessary to balance the inequities of our food system.

GMO and The People's Right to Know - December 5, 2012

SUSO co-host Jodie Buller talks by phone with one of the organizers behind Label It WA, Chris McManus, about ballot measure initiative I-522: "The People's Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act", which would require that food sold in retail stores be labeled if it contains Genetically Engineered ingredients. Label It WA organizers are on track to collect enough signatures to bring I-522 to the State Legislature and Governor for a decision this Spring.

Local Food and Farming Connections - July 18, 2012

This weeks program gives a review of some food and farming connections in Skagit County. jim starts the program by speaking with Terry Belcoe (President & CEO of North Coast Credit Union and Skagit Community Action Board member) and Arielle Stein (Community Action - heads up the county Food Distribution Center) about the upcoming Bite of Skagit. The 4th Annual Bite of Skagit will take place on Sat., July 28th in downtown Mount Vernon. Listen to hear about the Skagit Food Share Alliance which it benefits as well as what is in the offing that day - or go to their website.

Next jim talks with Kveta Morgan, manager of the Garden of Hope Farm (2 Acres) on Avon Allen just south of SR 20. She talks about who works the farm and who benefits from its bounty. Work party this weekend (July 21) 9-noon or 1-4 PM.

Then Sarita Schaffer of Viva Farms provides an update on the Farm Bill working its way through Congress. Finally, jim provides info on the various Farmers Markets here in Skagit County.

Bite of Skagit 2011 - July 20, 2011

Healthy Food in Schools - March 16, 2011

SUSO's Jodie Buller talks with Rita Ordonez, parent and W WA Coordinator of the Fresh Food in Schools grant, Ellen Gray, Executive Director of the Washington Sustainable food and Farming network, and Tim Terpstra, a local organic farmer, about their work to get healthy local food in Skagit cafeterias. Jodie's guests will continue their conversation on March 24th - after the WA premiere screening of the documentary Lunch Line. Lunch Line looks at the history of the school lunch program, and follows a group of students as they learn to cook, and try to satisfy the USDA's budget and guidelines at the same time. Rita Ellen and Tim will be part of a panel including one of the film makers, Ernie Park, and georgia Johnson from the La Connor school District. The Lunch Line screening is part of the Skagit Human Rights Festival, which is free -7pm on Thursday March 24th, at the Lincoln Theatre.
