Radiant Electric Heat's
Radiant Infrared
Portable Heater

Radiant Electric Heat Inc. of Menomonee Falls, WI, (yes, an American Company)…designs and manufactures high end Infrared heating appliances for the home, hospital or manufacturer.

This one is the model 1624SS Portable which is built well beyond ETL or UL standards and is in fact built to the DME (Durable Medical Equipment) standard.

Being a panel Infrared heater the SS is designed to heat objects in a given area and like all Infrared heaters does NOT heat air.

Quite large in size at 26 inches Wide by 21 inches high by 3.375 inches deep at 39 pounds weight this is a serious heater for serious work.

Built of stainless steel with removeable castors for easy placement, the controls are ultra simple with a toggle switch for off and on, a large Power on light and a thermostat with numbered increments for easy consistant temperature setting.

Heat comes from the non glow panel at a modest 1000 watts which produces enough heat to warm an area 12 by 12 or it can spot heat which is what it really does best.

Experience has taught me that understanding how Infrared works makes efficient use much easier.

First, understand that Infrared heat heats only objects and not air, it is a line of sight heat so you don't want to block its view, for example, if you have it aimed at a wall but there is a bed between the heater and the wall, it will heat only the bed so give this heater a clear view of the area you want to heat so it can do its job of heating much more effectively which in many cases means lifting it off the floor to aim down on the area to be heated to get above obstructions and increase contact area.
Infrared heaters are sensitive to cooling outdoor temperatures, so as it cools outside, your walls cool as well which means that there is a point to where the Infrared simply cannot keep up with the  cooling process which may seem like a definite limitation and it is to a point, until you take time to understand that if you give Infrared what it wants you will be the benefactor in a BIG WAY!

This cooling effect can be slowed with heavy insulation and particularly thick solid walls, floors and ceilings of plasterboard, wood or lightweight concrete and the like, the thicker the better in order to provide more mass which actually stores the heat and reduces the load on the Infrared heater and for that matter any heater.
Infrared heats different materials better than others through a process called Emissivity, even colors can play a significant part in how well Infrared can be absorbed and thus produce heat.

What we have found is Infrared heating in poorly insulated rooms is self defeating as is heating a poorly insulated room in general.

We have experimented for three years using Polyester fabric on walls to increase insulation value as well as its ability to decrease temperature transmission through walls and the results have been impressive.

Now, with Infrared, the results have taken us to the next level and Infrared heat when combined with increased thermal mass is staged to become the  next clear winner in low cost hi efficiency heat.

Infrared heat requires no fans, produces no odors and does not broadcast dust, this is why many people with respiratory conditions use Infrared heat, it is a very clean heat.

The 1624SS is built to be used in real world conditions should you ever need to replace something, parts are also available.

Keep in mind that this is built to the highest standard there is, pricing  reflects a very high quality product DME (Durable Medical Equipment)   at $999.00.

This is just the beginning, we are currently building a test room 11 X 13 using using our heavy wall method which should greatly increase heat retention  while reducing energy cost.
