Fire and Water

“Again alas!” Lystara cried. “For if I were to get to close to one of your glorious infernos, it would just as soon be the death of me as my relm would be to you! For the spirit of the water that I command and hold within myself would boil and escape away just as readily as the essence of your power would.

Rochner drew even closer to Lystara in that moment. “My dear one, there must be a way for us to stay with each other in this world without destroying each other.”

“Perhaps,” She replied. “But I do not have the answer. Perchance the Great Dragon can offer some advice.”

When the Great Dragon heard their dilemma, He was silent: thoughtful for a long while. Finally he spoke: “Wait here, my children,” he said. “I shall call the other two dragons to Conclave and advise you all of my council on this matter.”

Rochner and Lystara waited excitedly, just as the Great Dragon told them, but it seemed to take ages and ages for him to return with the other dragons. But finally he did, bringing the Dragon of Earth and the Dragon of the Air with him.

Finally Shoralel’s curiosity overcame her. “Father,” she asked, “Why have you called us all together like this? Has one of us committed a transgression?”

No, my child. But I am in need of your help. Your two siblings here want to be mated and live united together, one with the other. They cannot, however, because neither would survive long in the other’s realm.”

“But how can we help them?” inquired the Dragon of Earth. “What can we do that you cannot?”

“Would you doom your dear brother and sister to live the agony of union of spirit but separation of body? We five must work together to create a realm that both Fire and Water can dwell together.”

“I think I may have the answer!” Shoralel announced. “Father, if you fused the two of their powers together: power over water and power over fire, and Varistan’s power over earth, you could create a new element: liquid fire. Molten rock and metal that flows like water!.

“What an ingenious solution!” Yenoh exclaimed. “Do the four of you agree?” All four dragons nodded emphatically. “Then so be it.”

And so it was that dragons of Water and Fire were able to dwell together for the rest of eternity, under a certain mountain from whence fire flows in rivers like water. “But I will give you another gift.” The Great Dragon told them. “From this day forth, since you showed great bravery in coming to me with this and great love for each other, I grant you my greatest power: The two of you alone now have the ability to create other dragons. But since you are my son and daughter, the dragons that you create will be mortal; they will not live indefinitely. And their powers will be lessened, none will ever be as powerful as any of us immortals. But they will prosper and grow strong, and our kind will continue long after all others have disappeared.
